COMMUNITY-BASED WORK PROGRAM

Students work with the chef-manager to prepare and serve lunch to the ICHS students/staff, as well as our own students and staff at Immaculate Conception High School Food Service.

Students participate in a formal Community-Based Work & Career Awareness Program, which reflects community employment opportunities.  Flexible career awareness and job sampling allow participants to experience a variety of vocational environments and enables the staff to assess the students’ aptitudes, interests, and progress.

Students (ages 14 and up) participate in the Community-Based Work & Career Awareness Program under the supervision of three full-time (SLE) Structured Learning Experience Coordinators and Job Coaches who are fully certified staff members.  Beginning with one 1 per week, students increase to working 5 or more periods per week by age 21.  Periods of participation range from 30-90 minutes in duration depending on the job (ICHS Lunch Service may be up to a full morning).  Work sites, jobs, and community locations include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Immaculate Conception High School Lunch Service (on campus) – Prep, Service, and Clean-up for Lunch
  • Felician College Child Care Center (on campus) – assist teachers with play and snack
  • Pizza Pasta (Lodi)– bus tables; stock supplies
  • Vittorio's Pizza Bistro (Lodi)– bus tables; stock supplies
  • K Mart (Lodi) – assist in shipping and receiving
  • OLL Care Center Recreation Dept (on campus) – assist with activities in recreation therapy groups; serve in the Cafe
  • Felician College Goya Dining Hall (on campus) – bus/clean tables; stock supplies
  • Immaculate Conception Convent Dining Room (on campus) – prepare dining room for evening meal; stock supplies
  • Walgreens (Lodi) – restock items to shelves; assist with displays
  • Dunkin Donuts (Wallington) - clean, set-up, and stock supplies.
  • Great Clips Salon (Lodi) – fold towels; sweep floors; assist staff
  • Burger King (Lodi) – stock supplies; bus tables; clean dining area
  • Passaic Animal Shelter (Passaic) – assist with laundry and cleaning dishes, preparing food, and general maintenance.

The Community-Based Work Program at Felician School also includes completing contract work for outside companies such as local unions and churches, Boy Scouts of America, Sanford Pen, and Staples.  Contract work is completed in our on site production workshop.

Our students are involved in assisting within our school building as well: setting up for events; taking photos for the newsletters, website and other media; and stocking supplies for various offices.

We feel our students are increasingly better prepared for life; and our staff is better prepared to help them and their families make choices that will result in a rewarding future.
