Students also participate in a formal on-the-job training program which reflects community employment opportunities. Flexible on-the-job training programs allow participants to experience a variety of vocational environments and enables project staff to assess the students’ aptitudes, interests and progress.
At present, a total of 70 students participate in the on-the-job training program with the supervision of a teacher/transition coordinator. Students at age 14, participate in 1 to 2 work periods a week, gradually increasing to 5 or more periods a week by age 21. Job sampling periods range from 30 to 90 minutes in duration depending upon the job. Work sites and jobs include the following:
- Immaculate Conception High School (maintenance)
- Felician College Child-Care (teacher assistants)
- Scardino's Pizzeria (busing tables)
- Kmart (assisting in shipping & receiving)
- Our Lady of Lourdes Infirmary (laundry)
- Felician College Cafeteria (maintenance)
- Felician Convent Dining Room (busing tables)
The On -The-Job Training Program at Felician School continues to grow with companies such as: Local Unions and Churches, The Boy Scouts of America, Sanford Pen, and Staples. We feel students are increasingly better prepared for life and our staff is better prepared to help them and their families make choices that will result in a rewarding future. |
